I've been thinking a lot about The Cult of Ken Jennings and it reminded me of a story by David Foster Wallace in Girl With Curious Hair. I believe the story is "Little Expressionless Animals" -- since I sent my copy to Tess, I'll have to defer to her on this one. Or, if anyone wants to send me a new copy...
